While we were in the States recently, we purchased some kindergarten and first grade curriculum from Sonlight. Right now, Aria is going through the kindergarten material, but Nina and Micah are right there with us when we read stories and do activities, so we are kinda doing it all together. :) We are really enjoying it so far. The focus in kindergarten, is just learning about different cultures. I think it's great that the kids are exposed to the fact that not everyone thinks the same and does the same things, although I guess they are aware of that just from being in our family. :) This past week, we've been learning about the Romans. So, on Friday, we decided to have a Roman meal. The kids just loved it!
The kids thought it was great that they could lay down on the couch and eat off of the coffee table. And since the Romans would not use silverware or individual plates, we didn't either. We tried to eat foods typical to the Romans (although, we didn't go as far as eating snails :D). Hard boiled eggs, fruit, vegetables, cheese, and a type of bread pudding (milk-soaked bread fried in hot oil, dipped in honey) completed our meal.
The Romans, of course, did not use napkins. Instead, they would wash their hands between each course of the meal. So, I set up a basin of water on a nearby chair where the kids could go and wash their hands when they thought it was necessary. I think they enjoyed that a bit too much. :)
