What's been going on

This past week, David has had more opportunities at the local university. On Thursday, he spoke at another German class. While there, the English teachers found out that David knows English and is married to a native English speaker. So, they met with David, and it looks like David may have the opportunity to help out with some English classes as well. These students have had 5 years of English grammar (I know they know it better than me!), but just have not had the opportunity to practice the language. So, they asked David just to come and talk with the students about once a week. We hope that I'll be able to participate in this as well, as it is a great way to get to know the students.

It's funny to us, because when David was in high school, he had to take an English class. He totally did NOT like it, and did rather bad in it. He thought that he would never need to use English, so why even bother learning it? Little did he know that several years later he'd go to the States, even go to school 4 years there, and marry an English-speaking gal! Now, he has the opportunity to help with English at a university level. And, the funny thing is, he feels so much more comfortable speaking in English than in German! I told David that this is something we could tell our kids if they ever complain saying, "why do we have to learn this? I'll never use it anyway!"

David has also been enjoying meeting weekly with the German teacher and translator. They have been introducing him to different aspects of their culture. On Friday, they took David to the Buddhistic temple, and David was able to observe a service there. (For those of you who may be wondering why David would go to a Buddhistic temple... Buddhism is a very important religion and part of the culture here in T-land. As it is our desire to understand how the people here think, we need to learn all the different aspects of their culture as well as we can. David did not participate in the service, rather, just observed what was taking place. All the while, David was talking to Someone else. :D)

This past week during our little morning pre-school here at home, the girls have started making an ABC book. For each letter, they color pictures that begin with that sound, cut them out, and paste them to the correct letter page. The girls are really enjoying doing this, and it has been so much fun seeing them learning to identify the different letters. (Big 'A' is their favorite letter so far.)

The past couple days, Micah hasn't been feeling very well. He is running a low fever, and last evening, he even threw-up. We are hoping it's just a mild case of the flu. Our little guy does not 'play sick' very well at all. The evenings and nights are the worse, as he just screams and wants to constantly be held. Hopefully this will soon pass as I'm getting pretty tired. :) Plus, it's not fun seeing our little guy not feeling well.

Now that it is November, it just feels colder outside! Yesterday afternoon, I took the girls for a little walk, and I was sure glad that I had put their heavy winter coats on. No, we haven't had a real snow fall yet. :( Pretty late for this year. They say if we don't get much snow, then it's going to be a very cold winter... great. Snow, can you please come???

The other day, Nina came to me all frustrated. "Mommy (hiccup), I have the 'iccups'. (hiccup) I don't like them because (hiccup), because, because, I can't talk!"

Hi Christy--I just wanted to tell you that we are getting a little bit of the German culture inour home this year. We have a girl from Kerpen, Germany living with us thru January 09. She knows English very well as she said she had to learn it as early as 2-3rd grade. Wish she could meet you all! Makes me think of your family though at times when she talks of Germany and when I hear her talk to her parents back home. I sure can not make out anything--it is such a deep, guteral(/) language! So anyway--blessings, Gina Spicher
