My Children, My Teachers

Today the girls and I were outside quite a bit. We decided to explore some of the nearby play areas. As we came to one play area, which consisted of a wooden bench and sandbox, I thought to myself, “Wow, this is pathetic. There’s no sand in the sandbox, just a bunch of dirt and stones. Looks like the same type of dirt that’s outside the sandbox. Why do they even have a sandbox here?” As I was thinking this and beginning to feel sorry for the girls and the other children around, I realized that Aria and Nina were not thinking the same as me. Instead, they were thinking the opposite! They got all excited, and with big smiles on their faces began playing with the dirt and rocks (and occasionally, pieces of glass!). They were actually having fun! Not once did they complain about the dirt. That little “sandbox” kept the girls occupied for almost an hour!

As I watched them play so happily, I had to wonder why I was/am so quick to become discontent and begin complaining. I just saw the ‘disgustingness’ of the sandbox, while the girls just saw all the fun possibilities it contained! Oh, may I become more like a child and, not only be content with my circumstances, but actually enjoy them! Thanks Aria and Nina for teaching me an important lesson today. I love you both so much!

The girls enjoyed being outside and playing together. It didn't matter that the sandbox had no sand in it! :D

This little girl came to play for a little bit. Aria loves it when other children are around to play with!
