This is part of an e-mail that I wrote to my parents this morning. Since I don't have much time to type up something different, and I would like you all to know this, I thought I'd just post the e-mail I sent to them here. Many of you know that when Aria was born, she had some hip problems that needed to be corrected with a cast. Right after Micah was born, his hips were thoroughly checked at the hospital, and we were told that they were totally fine. Well, apparently they are not as good as we thought. We'd really appreciate your thoughts for us at this time. Here is the e-mail I sent my parents.
Well, yesterday (Friday) we had a very unpleasant surprise. We took Micah to the doctor’s for his next check-up. It is routine that at this check-up, the doctor does an ultra-sound of every baby’s hips. Well, since we were told at the hospital that everything is fine with his hips, we didn’t think much about this ultra sound. Yet, as the doctor began doing the ultra sound, we realized that his hips are not o.k. Actually, they are quite bad. Not quite as bad as Aria’s were, but still bad. So, the doctor then referred us to an orthopedic specialist (we went to him with Aria too). We then went to this doctor, but since we didn’t have an appointment and he is quite busy, we had to wait several hours before we could see him. He told us that Micah’s right hip is not as bad and could be corrected with just a brace. Yet, his left hip is on the border line of needing a cast. So, he wanted us to go to the head doctor of the orthopedic department at the hospital to get his opinion of what we should do. Well, by the time we got to the hospital, the head doctor had already left for the weekend. So, we went back to the other doctor, and he put Micah into a brace right away. We are supposed to go to the hospital on Monday and let the head doctor see Micah. It will then be determined if he needs to wear a cast or not.
So, Micah had a rough night last night, and probably will for the next couple of days. David and I really like this brace though (it’s different from Aria’s) as we think it does the job better, and doesn’t have any bars or such sticking out. (We’ll try to take a picture and post it on the blog so you can see how it looks… whenever we find the time!) Yet, it is quite uncomfortable for Micah and will take some time getting used to it. The worst is when I go to put it on after changing his diaper… he’ll just scream. Makes my heart hurt… real bad, but we know it must be.
So, we are really hoping that Micah will just need this brace. If we are told on Monday that he needs a cast… well, I don’t think we’ll be going back to Russia for a while… at least not me and the kids. If he just needs the brace, we can return to Russia as planned and just get him checked again when we are in Germany in June to renew our visas. Oh, and something that is quite scary for David and I, is that the orthopedic specialist wants to see Nina too. So, the 19th (the day before we hope to leave) we have an appointment with him for Micah and Nina. He wants to do an x-ray of Nina’s hips to make sure they are o.k. He says that even though she walks fine now, it doesn’t mean that everything is o.k. If her hips aren’t o.k., by the time she reaches our age, she could have serious hip problems. We just don’t know what we’ll do if Nina’s hips aren’t o.k., or if she needs some kind of treatment. Can’t imagine putting a 2 year old in some kind-of brace or something. An extremely scary thought for us. So, we would really appreciate your thoughts for both Micah, and Nina.
Needless to say, yesterday was a very difficult day for us. In the stress of all this paper work and trying so hard to get back to Russia ASAP, we now have this to deal with. I told David that even though Micah’s brace is not fun, I can deal with it… but a cast? I just don’t want to have to go through that again. It seems like we are trying so hard to get back to Russia, and stay there, and everything is against us. Paper work stuff and now this. We are pretty exhausted of it all, but don’t know what else to do, besides keep going and trying. So, we’d really appreciate your thoughts in all of this. Thank-you.
Well, better get back to my family. Right now, Micah is sleeping in his car seat, which seems to be a place that he is most comfortable right now.
Love you guys,
Christy for us all
